The Graffiti Hurts® National Grant Program aims to help communities kick-start or add on to a local graffiti prevention program. Grant funds may also be used for a one-time project that has the potential to help reduce graffiti vandalism in the community. Grants of $2,500 are offered in three categories - community under 75,000 population, community between 75,000 and 250,000 population, and community over 250,000 population. The funds must be used for projects that will be initiated in Fall 2010 and completed no later than December 31, 2011. Proposed projects can address graffiti prevention and education, eradication, or enforcement of local anti-graffiti laws. Nonprofits, neighborhood and community organizations, youth groups, government agencies, and others are all eligible to apply. Deadline is June 1, 2010.

AdLit.org Exquisite Prompt challenge is an activity that gives K-12 students a chance each month to flex their writing muscles with writing prompts - and win fabulous prizes! To be eligible for prizes, students will be asked to submit original writing of 350 words or less for each writing prompt. Illustrations may be submitted with entries. This month's prompt for grades 9-12 is inspired by Lemony Snicket and A Series of Unfortunate Events. The prompt asks students to develop a project on behalf of a cause and write to a potential benefactor or foundation. In the nonprofit sector, this kind of business letter is often called a Letter of Inquiry. The goal of the project is to identify, recognize, and showcase middle level and high schools that serve large numbers of students living in poverty and are high achieving or dramatically improving student achievement. Selected schools will receive a $5,000 grant and be featured in the association's monthly magazine, Principal Leadership. Principals of Breakthrough Schools participate in dissemination activities at the NASSP Annual Convention and other venues throughout the year. NASSP invites middle level and high schools, including K-8 and K-12 schools, that serve economically disadvantaged students to apply for this award. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, June 14. Self-nomination is not admissible for this award. To be eligible for the award, a leader must work for a U.S.-based nonprofit or non-governmental organization and have had a transformative, measurable impact within his or her field, beyond just one organization. Once the nominations have been submitted, they will be evaluated by a selection committee of nonprofit leaders. Finalists will be asked to submit answers to brief essay questions and those responses will be posted on the IS website for public voting by NGen program participants. These results will be incorporated into the committee's final decision. The winner of the NGen Leadership Award will be announced in late August, and will be recognized during the IS Annual Conference in Atlanta, October 20-22. Kennedy Serve America Act. The purpose of the new initiative is to encourage collaborative community problem solving that increases students' academic and civic engagement while improving the odds that they will stay in school and graduate from high school. CNCS anticipates awarding between four and twelve three-year grants of $300,000 to $450,000 per year to create networks of individuals, organizations and institutions that support the positive development of young people. These grants will provide support for "eligible partnerships" to build on existing resources to develop coordinated school-based or community-based service-learning opportunities for secondary school students. All partnerships must include, at a minimum, at least one LEA (school or school district), one community college, and one community-based entity. Applications are due by June 15 at 5 p.m. EDT. Up to 20 planning grants of up to $500,000 each will be awarded. The competition is open to nonprofits and institutions of higher learning. The initiative will support up to 20 organizations with one year of funding to plan for implementing "cradle-to-career" services. The Promise Neighborhoods program will award one-year grants to support the development of a plan to implement a Promise Neighborhood.
