Introduction & Opportunity Overview
The International Council on Clean Transportation seeks a Chief Operating Officer (COO) with senior management and operational experience to manage the financial, administrative, and operational aspects of the organization. The COO is a new position within the organization and will report to the Executive Director (ED) and works as a peer to the Chief Program Officer (CPO).
This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with demonstrated success developing and monitoring systems to manage both operational and programmatic work in a highly collaborative environment. The international scope of the ICCT’s activities demands an executive with the interpersonal and relationship skills to build effective teams around project based work and multi-level collaborative relationships. The ICCT invites candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including private sector businesses and professions, nonprofit advocacy or services, and government leadership.
The ideal candidate will have the necessary skills and background to address both immediate and long-term priorities of the position: completing the implementation of a recent reorganization; helping to complete a 3-to-5 year strategic plan and to lead future strategy development; communicating and managing a plan for organizational progress and growth aligned with the long-term vision outlined in that strategy; managing engagement with the board of directors and with the management team; and fostering a climate that motivates high performance across the organization.
Position Overview
The COO will oversee all the financial, administrative, and operational aspects of the organization, with primary responsibility for establishing and implementing systems to execute the organization’s strategic plan and goals. The COO will develop and polish concrete goals and systems to track progress toward those goals, coach staff in achieving their goals, and will serve as a thought partner with the ED around operational efficiencies and opportunities.
The COO will supervise four direct reports, including the Director of Finance, the Communications Director, the Development Manager, and the Office Manager/Human Resources Manager. She or he will provide the leadership, management and oversight to ensure the organization maximizes results and performance, with sound financial management and controls and communication; efficient and cost-effective operations; effective policies, procedures, and processes; human resource systems to ensure excellent staff performance, growth, and development; and communications that promote a high degree of alignment and focus.
Key Qualifications
- Master's in relevant field and/or MBA preferred.
- Significant professional experience with management and operational responsibility. Ideally has experience in not-for-profit organizations and has worked in a senior management role.
- Demonstrated competence in financial planning and analysis and budgeting processes, with experience overseeing human resources management, information systems operations, multiple site facilities and legal compliance.
- Experience overseeing and managing risk management and legal instruments such as global contracts, letters of agreement and contracts, leases, equipment purchases, insurance and other legal documents and agreements.
- Experience aligning development and fundraising strategies and activities to daily operations.
- Experience creating, implementing, managing policy and procedures manual and workflows for finance, human resources, information systems, communications and administration staff.
- Experience managing and partnering with a senior managers and Board of Directors.
- Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan. Ability to translate mission, strategies and goals into day-to-day operational objectives.
- Ability to engage in strategic planning and implementation of strategic plans. Preference in implementing strategic plans for an international NGO or multinational project.
- Exceptional writing, verbal communication, decision-making and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and respond appropriately to rapidly changing priorities: flexible, adaptable, proactive, efficient, collaborative, and resourceful.
- High level of maturity, empathy and respect for confidential information. Highly developed interpersonal and influencing capabilities. Engaged and passionate.
- Experience managing, mentoring and coaching staff.
- Strong interest in advancing ICCT's mission.
- Experience working on transport, development, or climate issues in developing countries is highly desirable but not required.
- Fluency with QuickBooks or other small business accounting software, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and Google Apps.
