 Captain Planet Foundation will accept small grant requests for amounts between $500 - $2,500.  All proposed activities must be project-based, projects must be performed by youth; and projects must have real environmental outcomes. New Funding from the CNCS Social Innovation Fund!

This is an exciting time for the Social Innovation Fund. In a few months, SIF will celebrate its five year anniversary, and yesterday, they launched their fourth funding competition! Thanks to a substantial increase in this fiscal year’s appropriations, the Social Innovation Fund will invest $65.8 million in award funds to grantmaking institutions that are ready to disrupt the status quo. 

I’ve been a grant reviewer for SIF and been nothing but impressed by this amazing funding stream.

If you are a grantmaking institution that is serious about finding solutions that work and making them work for more people, then you should check out their Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA), and start the application process today. The 2014 competition builds on nearly five years of "lessons learned" and places a special emphasis on Promise, Opportunity, and Impact. 

The 2014 competition encourages applications with strong plans to expand opportunity for youth disconnected from school or work, leverage collective impact approaches, or serve America’s most vulnerable populations and underserved communities. They are serious about solutions that work, and even more serious about helping to drive impact on issues of critical national importance today.

J-Serve Grants

J-Serve is the International Day of Jewish Youth Service. Improve Donor Choice. End the Overhead Myth.

Common Ground has just joined GuideStar, Charity Navigator, and BBB Wise Giving Alliance in the pledge to end the overhead myth. Instead of focusing on the percentage of charity’s expenses that go to administrative and fundraising costs—commonly referred to as “overhead”—we need to focus on what really matters: impact.

GuideStar, Charity Navigator, and BBB Wise Giving Alliance published an open letter to the donors of America denouncing the “overhead ratio” as a valid indicator of nonprofit performance.  The letter, signed by all three organizations’ CEOs, marks the beginning of a campaign to correct the common misconception about the importance of a low overhead ratio.

The open letter, published on a new website overheadmyth.com, states that “Overhead costs include important investments charities make to improve their work: investments in training, planning, evaluation, and internal systems—as well as their efforts to raise money so they can operate their programs. When we focus solely or predominantly on overhead…we starve charities of the freedom they need to best serve the people and communities they are trying to serve.” The letter goes on to recommend that donors focus their attention on more relevant factors behind nonprofit performance: transparency, governance, leadership, and results.

21st Century Solutions Tech Grants

Voices for National Service and ServiceNation, in partnership with AmeriCorps Alums, are launching the first ever “I Serve Because…” Video Contest.  If you are passionate about the promise of national service, watch this “I Serve Because…”video from US Senator Tom Harkin then submit a video of your own. As Sen. Harkin explains, “The future of national service depends on your voice being heard.”

 

 

 

You can help us by not only recording your own “I serve because” video, but also by recruiting your friends, peers and co-workers to record one as well.  Will you help us spread the word about our video contest by updating your Facebook page, Twitter feed and email list? Click here for a promotional email template you can use as a guide to draft a message to your program list.

 

Sharing the video contest information is easy.  Click here for resources on how your organization can make and submit a video, view other entries for examples of what you can do on our Tumblr page. In the coming weeks, we’ll post the most compelling videos on our Facebook page. The creator of the video that receives the most “likes” will be named the winner, and will receive a prize.

 

Once recorded, you can even share your video, and the others we post, with your own Congressional delegation via your own social media channels.

It is crucially important that we share our stories of service with decision makers in Washington, and this contest offers a perfect opportunity to do just that.   The success of this effort hinges on our ability to gather a large amount of quality videos, and we need your help—so step up, get involved, and spread the word.
